This week we interviewed SpotOn.It  a service that analyzes your Google Calendar to improve your social life.

Connect your calendar, and SpotOn’s sophisticated algorithms will intelligently analyze your lifestyle to surface things you’d actually want to do, at the times you’re free to do them.

“Making the most of your time has never been easier.”

1. How did you come up with this idea?

The catalyst was right after we graduated from college. I had a job in banking and my career felt like a rat race, but my social life felt like I was on a gerbil wheel – the routine was abysmal. At the same time, I felt like if something wasn’t on my calendar – I just never got to it.

So, the idea of turning calendar into a dynamic fun tool instead of a drudgery of scheduling to-do tasks really appealed to me. It also seemed like a user experience that people on the go would appreciate.

We’ve now to created even more tools to make calendar more usable including our Chrome Extension which makes it seamless to add a date from a webpage to your gCal. So, now you have no excuses for missing worthwhile experiences with your loved ones.

2. What are some of you and your team’s must have apps?

Whatsapp: I have a very international background and Whatsapp makes sure I’m in touch with my friends around the world.
Mo+: Free calls to US/Canada – need I say any more?
Pandora: Trying to get a hang of Spotify but Pandora still seems like less work
Waze: Literally a life-saver at times of ridiculous traffic when Google Maps is useless
Dropbox: Have access to my files on the go so I can work wherever

Hipchat We use it as company wide chat and is literally an indispensable part of how we run our days.

3. What do you enjoy most about your day-to-day work life?

 Two things:
1) The fact that I’m working with people who are incredibly talented at what they do and also interesting as people (being bored by your co-workers is probably the achilles heel of any job, no matter how challenging.)

2) Our product helps people make connections in the real world with people who matter to them – it’s lovely hearing their stories and seeing how our tech can have such an impact.

Advice?
The folks at SpotOn.It have chosen one piece of advice to give current and future entrepreneurs:
Focus on finding the right partner – someone who both complements your skill set and someone you can trust. Part of doing a business is knowing that it’ll take multiple stabs before getting the product right and you need someone who can ride those highs and lows with you.

Who are entrepreneurs that you admire?

Huge fan of Elon Musk & Larry Page – they both have quiet demeanors that really pack a punch and are undeterred by most challenges.

Lastly, Apple or Android?

Android!  I’ve owned an iPhone for the last couple years but am totally switching over to the Galaxy S4 – love the fact that it’s open-source and allows for more innovation. Plus in terms of design, it has a much slicker UX than the iPhone does.
